Easy Shepherd's Pie

A classic casserole of ground beef and vegetables topped with mashed potatoes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cloves of garlic minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Brown ground meat in a pan over medium-high heat, breaking it into small pieces, until it is fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add frozen peas and carrots to the pan with the ground meat, and cook until they are thawed and the mixture is heated through.
  4. Season the ground meat mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Boil diced potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are tender, about 10-12 minutes.
  6. Drain the potatoes and mash them with butter and milk until they are smooth and creamy.
  7. Transfer the ground meat mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  8. Spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the ground meat mixture, making sure to cover it evenly.
  9. Bake the shepherd's pie in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the potatoes are golden brown.
  10. Remove the shepherd's pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
