Irish Soda Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and mix until combined.
  4. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add 1 cup of buttermilk.
  5. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until it forms a shaggy dough.
  6. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 1-2 minutes, until it comes together.
  7. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cut a cross in the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes before slicing.
