- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
- Brown the ground meat in a pan over medium-high heat, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks, until it is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes
- Soften the onions and any other aromatics in the pan with the ground meat, cooking until they are translucent, about 3-4 minutes
- Add any additional seasonings or spices to the pan and stir to combine, cooking for 1 minute
- Spread the cooked ground meat mixture into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish
- Boil diced potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are tender, about 10-12 minutes
- Drain the potatoes and mash them with butter and milk until they are smooth and creamy
- Spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the ground meat mixture in the baking dish
- Bake the shepherd's pie in the preheated oven until the potatoes are golden brown, about 25-30 minutes
- Remove the shepherd's pie from the oven
